On my last flight out of Mexico City, two of the three largest mountains in Mexico were visible out of my side of the plane. I always try to get a window seat on the right side of the plane just in case they are out. The legends that surround these mountains date back to Aztec times and still persist in modern Mexico. We hope to climb Itza this year but Popo is still off limits due to his flaming indigestion. On this day, he was quiet.
In this picture, we were climbing Ajusco – south of Mexico City – when we saw this ash eruption. One minute, he was quiet and the next, the ash cloud appears. Popo erupts like this daily but most result in no more than a light puff of ash as you see here.
