Recently, I began re-reading my grandmothers diary from the year 1927. It’s the only year that we have as far as I know and the same year a flood of biblical proportions visited the Mississippi Delta and submerged my grandparents town – Louise, MS – under about 8′ feet of muddy, pestilent, floodwater. More on that later.
On Jan. 1, 1927, the year auspiciously starts with the diary entry “I got a 60 Chrysler Sedan for Xmas …. I’m Crazy about it. I got a set of dishes and lots more pretty things”. I searched and found this picture (below) of a C-60 on-line. Stay tuned to find out how the car weathered the flood. According to the diary, she and friends made many a trip to the “picture show” in nearby Yazoo City, MS – Gateway to the Mississippi Delta – in the Chrysler.
The diary is a fascinating read as she lists each movie that they went to (about 1 or 2 a week) and sometimes a terse review on each picture. Many were silent films. According to some very brief research I’ve done, audible films were becoming common in the late 1920’s. I’ll keep checking on that.
Another interesting entry later that same new years day revealed that “I decided not to make new resolutions to-day, but to try to keep my old ones”. She didn’t elaborate further unfortunately.
