2012 Planting Starts

Below you can see plants sprouting in seed trays filled with screened compost.  Some tomatoes, squash and zucchini have been moved to the garden (second pic) already.  Still coming along in trays are tomatoes, peppers, basil, lettuce, spinach, eggplant and marigolds for a little color.

Below is the start to the garden.  Garlic on the left is about ready to harvest.  Rows with tomatoes, squash and zucchini are built up to help with watering and allow sun to heat up ground faster.  Middles will be mulched later for weed control and water retention.  Milk jugs in background were used over the last couple of weeks to protect tomatoe seedlings.

Good Friday is the traditional planting day here in our part of the world.  The ground finally dried out enough by Saturday and I decided to get the basil planted.  The starts were really a bit too small yet but sometimes you have to plant when the opportunity presents itself.

Planting Complete

You can barely see them now but the basil will really take off when we get a bit more heat later this month and into May.  I’m guessing that the first pesto run will go around the first of May.  We’ll be harvesting small amounts of fresh basil for the kitchen (Pizzas!!) much sooner.
